Saw some soap dishes and little corner shelves in the £1 knick-knacks section in Asda, thought I'd give them a go in the fishtank and the axolotls love to sit on them! The little soap dish is perfect for Crixus, he's still tiny, and for the adult axolotls the corner shelves are great. Some pebbles, shells and plants sit on them without weighing them down at all.
Any other cheap ideas for shelves, hides or ornaments in fish tanks? Would love to provide more hides for them but purpose-made ones can be ridiculously expensive!
Have you ever considered growing underwater plants in the tank with them?
I don't have a fish tank at the moment, but am hoping to get one this winter to set up an aquaponics system. Haven't had a fish tank for years haha! Like the idea with the soap dishes. I'd say an old half plant pot or partially buried plant pot on it's side might make a nice sheltered hideout for them, plus they can climb on top as well of course.

smilesbetter They have a big log with live plants rooted to it - the pot idea is great thanks I'll try that, and might be able to root some plants from the log onto it too!
Sounds great, would love to see pictures when you have it all up and running! I want to have a fully planted tank for the axolotls, but biding my time until I have the space to set up temp tanks while setting it up. I have never done it before and don't yet fully understand how to so would love to see how yours goes if you end up making one.

Easy once you have everything prepared, and so much fun to watch!
I have a huge tub I use as a wormery in the shed, they all eat earthworms and I only have to buy a new batch once every 2-3 months at about £4 for 100 grams. They get a 20% clean every week and once per month I change the carbon & amo-chips in the filter. Temps have to be kept down so they always have a fan on them in summer. Also I have a water test kit I check them with every couple of weeks which cost about £25 but it lasts ages, over a year so far and still loads left.
They are all separated now though, as they tend to nip anything that moves so I would advise only getting one to start with...or just feed them so much they don't want to ever nip anything but then they'd be pretty obese, and messy...
Sorry for rambling. Basically once you figure out your maintenance routine it's cheap and straight-forward.
Brilliant! This is perfect for Mr. Icky, my Betta He likes to roost on top of the grass blades in his lil tank but has to do a bit of balancing flapping. I think he would be in heaven with this fish hammock and smartly priced, too A bit of gravel on top like you have and he would roost for hours. He likes to stay near the top to keep a beady eye on the house movements, so this would be like his sofa for house telly lol. Thanks again for the tip, pawprintclaire
I'll try to but I always have a deuce of a time keeping his tank from glaring with the flash. One of those modern luxury fails lol. I actually picked up a dish at the pound shop just letting it leech tonight to make sure there isn't anything to hurt him on it. I am with you though, and so excited to see him perched up there! Thanks again for the tip and will try to get a decent pic up
tonib: Sounds like it was a good job we didn't have Roman as a kitten then. He's never misbehaved like that, only his first Xmas with us when he half-inched the stuffing! - I hope that's not famous last words!

tonib: Lexie is another matter but usually not breakables - except potentially of herself when she fell behind the large display cabinet/sideboard on being left alone for the 1st time in our dining room aged 2.5 years!!!

tonib: She jumped on top (via the table I believe) & managed to fall between it & the wall & appeared to be suspended by her head part way down (the gap narrowed!) I had to get a burly neighbour in to help move it, quickly moving weight/breakables as pos. 1st

tonib: She was fine but got checked by vet just in case! That was a heart stopping time, especially her cries!
