I just heard that a very good friend of mine sadly had to have their 6 year dog pts. The dog was taken as normal for its daily walk by their friend & dog walker. They visited the local park & Dennis was let off the lead in an enclosed area, sadly someone else left a gate open & Dennis was happily chasing a squirrel when he ran out & into a the road where the inevitable happened & although taken to the vet sadly Dennis had broken his back & had to be pts
Everyone is obviously distraught but there is an extra sadness in that the dog walker's father was called Dennis & he died on the 6th of January the year my friends got Dennis from the rescue so they kept his name in memory, strange that the dog should die on the same date. Even though it is very soon my friends husband can't imagine life without another dog so was just looking at the various rescues when he was struck by another collie cross called Danny & they have applied to adopt him. It also turns out that the dog walker's father, was known as Danny, so a lot of coincidences involved. A lot of people will think that its too soon to be thinking about another dog but they feel that they have a lot of love to give another dog, in memory of Dennis.
Whatever happens my friends' "very special" Dennis will be sorely missed by everyone including their other dog.
I would likely be the same as your friend. After our last dog had to be PTS and the house was empty, I swore that I'd never have just one dog again. I'd wanted another dog before Patch got old but my parents wouldn't allow it.
How sad. They must be devastated. Strange with all the coincidences regarding dates and names - I think it's fate that has led them to Danny - it's not too soon; he will help them and they will help him by giving him a loving home.
tonib: Sounds like it was a good job we didn't have Roman as a kitten then. He's never misbehaved like that, only his first Xmas with us when he half-inched the stuffing! - I hope that's not famous last words!

tonib: Lexie is another matter but usually not breakables - except potentially of herself when she fell behind the large display cabinet/sideboard on being left alone for the 1st time in our dining room aged 2.5 years!!!

tonib: She jumped on top (via the table I believe) & managed to fall between it & the wall & appeared to be suspended by her head part way down (the gap narrowed!) I had to get a burly neighbour in to help move it, quickly moving weight/breakables as pos. 1st

tonib: She was fine but got checked by vet just in case! That was a heart stopping time, especially her cries!
