Young Bella's given up her stratching boards and taken to clawing carpets not one particular carpet all of them Ive tried buying a scratching thing thats attached to a bit of carpet but shes ignoring it any ideas any one I'm running the risk of having bald carpets for Christmas
Oh Bella, naughty girl. It would have been easier if she scratched one particular carpet. When you say it is all carpets, is there a particular area on each carpet or is it just anywhere at all? My cats sometimes scratch the carpets but not all of the time. Mine however, ruined the wallpaper instead!
lotsofcats it's in a particular area by the doors I was warned about this from the rescue centre which is why there's scratching boards by them which she has used briefly but now decided the carpets are a better option ! It's funny you mention wallpaper that was Molly's thing Xx
Honey and Olive used to do this. They'd claw in any room with carpets but always by the door frame or corners of chest of drawers if it was a bedroom. To stop them from doing it, every time they did the behaviour we would give a short, sharp clap and a firm 'NO!' - enough to make them scarper. They're not particularly scaredy cats so it didn't bother them yet it seems to have worked as they haven't scratched carpets for a while!
I had a nightmare with both cats scratching, Flirty the carpet on the stairs, and Bandit the walls. Like jess I used a sharp NO! and a hand clap and it worked, but I had to go as far as getting some large sheets of acetate from work to cover the main walls that Bandit would scratch to protect the wallpaper.
Also I got some catnip spray for the scratching posts to attract them to where I wanted to scratch and it worked.
We only really have one spot that gets regularly clawed & mainly by Roman, although I haven't seen him do it for a while. He used to lay in the hall almost round the corner from the stairs & then pull himself along the stair carpet of the riser part of the bottom step until he reached the other side! He occasionally scratched the riser. We now have a hole in that piece of carpet If we said anythign he'd stop on that occasion but still do it again. The other 2 mainly do the odd bit of carpet scrtaching but I think its all about scent marking for them.
I wish I could offer some proven advice molly9 but I haven't found a solution for our cats who happily use the various scratching posts - mainly as great stretching exercise combined with claw stropping! Must admit maybe cazypops suggestion of catnip might help Bella go back to the scratching posts. I she's not a catnip fan then maybe try some valerian, that can also be an attraction for cats. Also can you cover the area(s) she's currently using so its no so pleasant for me - maybe some plastic sheeting/carpet runner.
tonib: Sounds like it was a good job we didn't have Roman as a kitten then. He's never misbehaved like that, only his first Xmas with us when he half-inched the stuffing! - I hope that's not famous last words!

tonib: Lexie is another matter but usually not breakables - except potentially of herself when she fell behind the large display cabinet/sideboard on being left alone for the 1st time in our dining room aged 2.5 years!!!

tonib: She jumped on top (via the table I believe) & managed to fall between it & the wall & appeared to be suspended by her head part way down (the gap narrowed!) I had to get a burly neighbour in to help move it, quickly moving weight/breakables as pos. 1st

tonib: She was fine but got checked by vet just in case! That was a heart stopping time, especially her cries!

lotsofcats: I can remember when that happened with Lexi.
