Hi all, I've got 2 cats and love going out. Recently they've been accidentally trapped/locked in someone's garage/shed a few times, although they have been retrieved successfully I can tell you that it wasn't easy.
So, with this in mind I've been thinking about a cat tracker, my friend recommended Miaufinder because it has no subscriptions and uses radiowaves. This doesn't mean much to me and wondering is anyone else has one, is it good? I don't know if there's an advantages/disadvantage of having RF, GPS, subscription, no subscription etc...
I've not come across the Miaufinder before, but it looks very promising (if a bit expensive). I tried the loc8tor, which is also an RF detector, but it had very poor range, and had to send it back. But that Miaufinder looks like it is a much better product. The quoted range of 1km is encouraging.
I've just ordered one of the Weenect GPS trackers, so will report back in due course. (Avoid the Pawtrack device - the company has gone bust).
As I mentioned in the thread that cs2015 gave above, we successfully use the Locator product but we have an older version from the one that is currently available. You do need to know roughly where your cat goes, if they are wide ranging then it can be a bit of a hunt. One advantage of this product is that our cats have learnt to come when we use it if they are in range as they can hear the beep.
It uses RFID technology & with batteries that aren't on their last legs then the range is around 600 feet. Like GPS, RFID can be affected by electricity supply such as pylons or sub-stations & this can reduce the range. If you are likely to be looking in wooded areas then this can also reduce the range but we've not had much problem even so.
We combined the Loc8tor with the GPaws GPS recorder so we got to find where to look for the cats. We have even found them indoors when we thought them out!
If you want a real time tracker which you can see from anywhere then you need a GPS one.
For one of our cats we have got the GPS system Pod2 from podtrackers. For us that works well.
As to subscriptions then I believe thus only applies to GPS real time trackers & is to cover the communication costs between the GPS device on the cat & the servers that will issue the command & record the locations.
I hope that helps jamesbob & sorry I can't comment on the miaufinder as I've no experience of that.
