I am new to the forum, so hello!
I own a Jack Russell called Enzo and just yesterday rescued a mature Newfoundland called Chester. Hence my name!
Anyway, Chester is divine, so placid and Enzo is taking to him well. I was told he enjoys car travel and this morning we all went out while I did some bits and pieces.
He was quite happy in the back of the Range Rover, but when we got home it became apparent he was probably a little too happy.
He will not come out.
He has a secure ramp (he weighs 65kg), he has been lured with treats (he's not too fussed by food) he's been encouraged to stand (he grumbles) but he will not move.
I know they're extremely loyal dogs to their families and he has undergone a trauma by leaving everything he knows and it will take time for him to settle with us, but I am anxious the car will become his safe place. A safe place from which he will not like to leave.
Any ideas for getting him down from the car in a positive way for both of us?
Welcome to the forum. Oh dear, I don't know what to suggest to get Chester to come out of the back of the car apart from luring him with food or treats but if he's not too bothered about either this won't work unless he is starving. Perhaps only take him in the car before he has his food and then he may be hungry enough to come out willingly for a treat. You don't want a battle every time you try to get him out of the car. Let us know how he gets on. My dog is the opposite and won't go in the car at all.
Well first off, it's been only a day and everything he's used to is gone. You've just got to be patient.
Are you able to leave the boot open for him when you get home so that he can come out on his own? Even if you've got to sit a short distance away and watch him?
You can create a safe place for him inside the house but it's just going to take a bit of time and encouragement for him to get used to it. For now, he obviously feels secure in the car so it'll have to be a waiting game. Reward him when he does eventually come out but don't force him out (although, at 65kg, he'd probably win ).
A bit of extra training wouldn't go amiss either. It'll help you bond and reinforcing a recall could help the car situation.
Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum secretlifeofpets, I hope you have managed to get Chester out of the car now.
We have a Parsons Russell called Jasper, and when we were training him food or treats were no good either. We found he responded better to a ball (preferably a tennis ball) so has Chester got a favorite toy that he might come out of the car for?
Welcome to the forum,we get Newfoundlands on our beaches, they are beautiful dogs.It must be very confusing to be taken into a new home and family,so must take lots of getting used to. Just be very patient,I suppose it's the only way with gentle coaxing. Your only problem is size,as you can't just lift a Newfie out of a car. Good luck, hope everything works out very soon.

Chester came down a couple of hours after I posted. He needed some gentle coaxing! Food, water, sticks, balls, his beloved soft toy collection - none would lure him! But I just kept at him and he came down begrudgingly in the end.
He wasn't keen on walking or going for a poo or doing anything much yesterday except sitting by me - I think he's really feeling his loss. Still, he's a lovely boy, and we will give him plenty of time to settle.
We just had a very successful walk this morning which makes things feel more positive. He is a lazy toad and just plants himself on the floor. So we left him behind. And the next thing we know he's trotting over to catch up.
He has a bit of arthritis so we won't push it.
I think he'll be very happy to lay down and watch Enzo the Jack Russell sprint in circles for no particular reason! x
Welcome to the forum secretlifeofpets. I'm glad to hear Chester did eventually get out of the car 65Kg would be very difficult to man-handle. Poor boy losing his old home it must be really confusing for him.
As has been said we'd love to hear how you all get on & see some photos of your pets. If you need any help with the forum don't hesitate to ask, we all were new here once

caz2golden: Last night Phoebe walked into the hedgehog down garden path, quite amusing watching dog jump sideways and give it a good sniff and then carry on her way for the loo. I love hedgehogs. Left some peanuts (for birds) out for it but it went back into border.
