I have decided I would like to try some turmeric for Gypsy and her joints as they are not as good as they were. The normal way to add it is to make golden paste, a mix of turmeric, water, black pepper and an oil. With Gypsy being pancreatic prone it is the choice of oil that worries me!
Was looking at getting a premade product but the one I was thinking of which uses flaxseed oil on facebook was implied not to be a good one and suggested should be coconut oil based.
Reading online coconut oil seems controversial, some sites seem to categorically say avoid coconut oil whereas other sites imply it contains Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) which are a form of fat that does not require pancreatic enzymes for digestion, so in theory should be ok for dogs with pancreatitis! confused.com!!
My sister sugested I give Beau same , only 2 weeks ago but think I will stick with Arthriaid hes been n that 3 years now. Hope you find your answers Caz it must be very daunting and frustrating no knowing which way to go x
I have no idea which to try but obviously do not want to make wrong decision. The more I read the more I am confused. Not really sure there is a right or wrong way to go as both involve adding fats to the diet. I am starting to wonder if I can rely on the meat that is already in her diet to act as the fat and just cook the turmeric up in water and add the pepper!
Just know when she has had NSAIDs in past they have not really suited her (bright orange poo or made her sick) so was hoping this might have been a temporary alternative to try and bridge the gap before needing to use them.
The plan was to use the turmeric alongside her current joint care, have already questioned supplier of joint care about using turmeric (they sell turmeric powder but not the ready made mix) and if dosages would need changing which they do not.
I know that orpheous87 uses golden paste, but can't remember if it just for herself or for pepper and Ellie too. I'm sure there is another thread on here somewhere about it. This is just one of her posts about it, hope it helps. yourpet.boards.net/post/133210/thread
As for coconut oil, I was watching a program on so called superfoods and it turns out that coconut oil is very high in fat.
tonib: Sounds like it was a good job we didn't have Roman as a kitten then. He's never misbehaved like that, only his first Xmas with us when he half-inched the stuffing! - I hope that's not famous last words!

tonib: Lexie is another matter but usually not breakables - except potentially of herself when she fell behind the large display cabinet/sideboard on being left alone for the 1st time in our dining room aged 2.5 years!!!

tonib: She jumped on top (via the table I believe) & managed to fall between it & the wall & appeared to be suspended by her head part way down (the gap narrowed!) I had to get a burly neighbour in to help move it, quickly moving weight/breakables as pos. 1st
