I don’t know cazypops! That’s just what I was told!! I’ll definitely ask again when I take her on Saturday. Last time she had 3 injections over a 3 week period. I think that was in May and it definitely helped.
She can start the other tablets tomorrow. Thanks bextull. It does seem strange, everyone I’ve spoken to and from what I’ve read online, nobody seems to treat with tablets. Apparently they still might not work. I’m going to ask on Saturday what they’re actually meant to do.
Poor girl had a really bad night last night. She just couldn’t settle and wouldn’t stop panting. She even had a couple of accidents in the house, which is absolutely unheard of! She was housetrained in 2 weeks and hadn’t had an accident since. I was awake and she didn’t ask to go out. Even if I wasn’t awake she’d normally bark in my face and let me know!! I was up with her best part of the night, trying to get her to settle. It worked eventually but horrible to see her so distressed. She’s been tired today, and is clearly uncomfortable. She’s limping and very grouchy. Still trying to act herself though bless her.
I’d never heard of it before! I looked it up on the internet, but can’t find anything about these tablets and the condition. Sure it must do something but was hoping to get a few opinions on how successful it is, but no luck. Millie will also have to have the op if this doesn’t work. She has had the cartrophen and it did help. Only I was told there was a limit to the number of times they could have it. The first lot she had has worn off now I think, but thought I’d wait until she’s a bit worse before having any more. She seems quite good in herself. Really grumpy every time she sees another dog, or even person at the moment, when we’re out, but other than that she’s wanting to walk and train etc.
Had to take Millie to the vets this morning. She has an aural haemotoma. The inside of her ear flap is swollen and filled with blood. They drained it today, but it’s already quite full again. She’ll start steroids on Thursday, but have to wait for the metacam to get out her system which is a nuisance as it’s time it’s uncomfortable for her but nothing being done. Poor girl will be in a right state, her joints will hurt with not metacam and she’ll have a heavy swollen ear She’ll have to have it drained again at the end of 5he week and back for a review a week after starting the tablets.
Thanks scallywag! This was the first time I’ve worked them both in the same routine, so was quite pleased with how it went! He’s not doing too badly with his tricks, it’s his behaviour that’s the problem! He’s been a lot better, though I do keep a really close eye on him. Yes, that was my sister! On and off, some days she offers to do things and others she just lays on her phone!
Glad to hear that things are improving milliepup04 albeit making you very busy. What are you studying at uni?
Great video of the 2 dogs & you.
Thanks! Don’t know about improving, but I’ve tried to take on a few more things. I do regret it though! I’m studying Canine Behaviour and Training - I’m enjoying it but soo hard to fit it in. Haven’t had chance to even think about the tasks that were set on Thursday yet.
Talking of missing members - has anyone heard from milliepup04 , she last posted 11th September but was logged on later (20th). I hope she & her family (human & animal) are OK.
That’s a coincidence - I literally just sat down for 10 minutes and thought it was a good opportunity to finally log on again!
Everyone here is ok, thank you. Been really busy the last month. Started uni so had to go to Yorkshire for a weekend last month, and that’s been keeping me quite occupied! I’m enjoying it, but really hard fitting everything in. I’ve started taking the puppy class at our training on a Monday, and then go with Rumple, so that’s Monday evening taken, and Thursday evening is 3 hours of webinars for uni. Then Friday morning I usually go and see a Dog AID client, also Monday afternoon Millie and I do a Pets as Therapy visit to a care home. So what with that and looking after my mum, running my sister around, I’ve been pretty taken up!
And trying to tame the beast that is Rumpelstiltskin too. He’s actually been much much better. I don’t trust him, but he’s definitely improved. He’s better with Millie and my grandad, and strangers. I’ve got a couple of women he doesn’t know to give him treats, which he’s actually taken, and on of the male trainers managed to give him a few treats on Monday for the first time too. Certainly not there yet, but heading in the right direction at last!
Keeping an eye on Millie too. She has good days and bad days. Still very eager to train and walk, so I do with her what she wants. When she doesn’t want to do something, or wants to cut a walk short I let her. After days where she’s done a lot she rests up a bit for a day or two after. I’ve noticed the foodie Lab definitely coming out more in her old age!! She’s still pretty good though.
Hope everyone here is ok - sure I’ve got some catching up to do!
This is what my guys have been working on in my absence from here!
milliepup04 So sorry you've been having more problems with Rumple, although I was very glad to read your facebook post today! If he does slip again, would you consider a Skype call with Devon Dogs? They can cover the NBN behaviours you're seeing in a 1 hour lesson over Skype which would cost you £50. I know it may not be the same as having them there with you, but it may be a cheaper way of getting some advice and training. Hopefully he's turned a corner and you won't need it, but it could be worth a shot if the behaviourists that you've seen already haven't been able to help.
I'm not sure of what else you could try without the help of a professional if his behaviour is that bad. You could, perhaps, try a gated community in the house. Get a puppy pen to keep him in for some of the time so that he can't have a go at Millie or go for your grandad/any other visitors. Then you can reward him for staying calm - just walk past and drop a treat in without saying anything to him. At first he'll probably jump up and expect more, but the more you do it, the quicker he'll relax again. And a puppy pen is a bit kinder than a crate as he'll have a bit more freedom.
Thank you! I didn’t know about the Skype call with them. I’d definitely give it a go if he starts going back downhill again.
Thats is also a good idea, thanks! I couldn’t really use a gate as it would be a tripping hazard for my mum, but maybe a puppy pen would work. Thank you, really appreciate your suggestions!
milliepup04 I'm sorry to hear about your problems with Rumple. You've had some good repliess & all I can add is even the vet can't find any medical issues then would they recommend any calming meds/supplements, especially if you explain the stresses in you & your households life at the moment.
As Rumple is a rescue I'm assuming he is neutered but if he isn't would that help? Although I don't know if done after a certain age whether it have the desired calming effect as testosterone triggered habits could be ingrained - I'm not in any way medically trained just remember a vets comment (in the 70's & I appreciate knowledge/opinion may well have changed since then) that past a certain age then neutering'c calming effects are not guaranteed & may well have a low % success in that area.
I hope you can find a solution for all.
Thank you. I’ll ask them about calming supplements when he goes for his boosters.
He is neutered, but unfortunately it was done too early (not stupidly early, but earlier than I’d have liked) due to him being a rescue.
Hopefully the improvement weve we’ve had over the last couple of days will continue. I’m not sure what I’ll do if not!
She sounds really horrible bextull! Such a shame it didn’t work out. It was really wrong of them not to be honest with you in the first place. Don’t blame you for leaving! Hope you manage to get something else sorted soon.
Thanks to to everyone who’s posted about Rumple. I’ve been trying really hard with him since Tuesday, and at the moment we seem to be having some progress! I hope it continues and he doesn’t go back downhill again. He’s going to the vets for his boosters this month so I’ll talk to them about calming supplements that are available too. I’ve actually managed to have 3 conversations with people in the last 2 days, because he hasn’t kicked off! Very exciting haha!!
Thank you Caz. He’s going for his vaccinations this month, so I’ll ask them to give him a check then - though they’re all scared of him! I’ll muzzle him before we go. Thanks.
Ive had two behaviourists, the first one was terrible, honestly I could have told her more! I asked at dog training who they recommend and they told me about this man. He came round a few weeks ago, and Rumple was a bit better after. Going away definitely set him back, I knew it would, but I can’t keep making excuses for him either. I can see that he’s somewhere he doesn’t know, with people he doesn’t know, and he’s stressed and reacts. He’s probably still getting over it, but I just can’t handle it. He’s already made me even more broke - over £400 on behaviourists They should have helped!!!
I really tried hard with him today, following the advice of the second behaviourist, and he has been a bit better. I took him to a field to run off lead with his muzzle on, and did some training with him which has hopefully used some mental and physical energy which could help. My grandad came round earlier, and doing what the behaviourist said, in fairness he was good. My grandad didn’t really move though, which I’m going to get him to do next time! I’m just worried it won’t last!
